Everyone Has A Story – Tell me Yours!

A couple of weeks ago I ran a re-post of a very popular post entitled “The Moment You Knew”.  In this post, I tell my story about how I found genealogy. It’s a personal story that resonated with many readers.

Far too often in genealogy we get caught up in the stories of our ancestors, although important, we tend to overlook the fact that our ancestor's stories are not the only tales that rise from our family history research. Our own journey of discovering our family history is a very important narration. We tend to forget to record our own journey into genealogy and its result of self-discovery. It's time for our own stories to take their place in the spotlight.

My Invitation to You

In 500-1000 words write a blog post telling us the story of your genealogy journey, ‘the moment you knew’ genealogy was going to be an important part of your life or an important moment in your journey, or perhaps a discovery and the lesson you learned. Email me your story in a word document entitled ‘The Moment I Knew.’ This will be an ongoing series; every two weeks, I will choose from the selected entries and publish one reader’s story on The Armchair Genealogist.

In order to continue my mission of encouraging writing family history, this will provide me with an opportunity to feature one wonderful family history storyteller and spotlight them on this blog. This is a great opportunity for you to practice your storytelling skills, bond with the genealogy community and share your story with an audience. This is open to all genealogists, professionals, amateurs and everyone in between. You do not have to be a writer, author or even a blogger.

If your story is chosen, you will receive an email from me, letting you know when your story will be published and requesting further bio information. This will prove to be a great opportunity to expose your own blog. If you don’t have a blog this exercise might provide you with the confidence needed to take your writing to the next level, whether that is a blog or a book or both. Or perhaps your writing a family history book and would like give us a glimpse into your journey.

How will I choose?

Well it’s my blog so the stories will be completely subjective to what I feel fits with the theme “The Moment You Knew”. I will be looking for a good story that demonstrates great storytelling skills and that I feel will resonate with the readers at The Armchair Genealogist.
