Monday Morning Mentions

Monday Morning Mentions is an opportunity to reflect on the events of the week at the Armchair Genealogist and in the blogging and book community. Over my morning cappuccino, I will take the opportunity to share with you some of my favourite blogs posts this week and give a nod to my peers.

You can also find me on Facebook. Stop by and leave a message. I often will link some great finds there as well. You can also follow me on twitter at @LynnPal or my twitter paper The Armchair Genealogist Journal.

At the Armchair Genealogist this week, posts included the following:

Tuesday's Tip - Class is In
What is the Larger Purpose of My Family History Story?

Internet Genealogy – a great genealogy or internet tip that will benefit any armchair genealogist.

This week's mentions include:

#1940 Census Who Has the Best Images? by Ancestry Insider. Are all databases created equal? The Ancestry Insider does the work so you don't have to.

What's Past is Prologue put together this week a great article on Finding Polish Records Online. Since I have Polish ancestry it jumped out at me because rarely do I see such great information pulled together in one spot on Polish records. Thanks Donna.

Chris Staats at Staats Genealogical Services hits the nail on the head with Fixing Your Genealogy Jalopy: A Metaphor. Well written, entertaining and a great lesson.

This next post is about one person's family history story and how a Who Do You Think You Are? episode made her question what constitutes an American patriot? Read Judy Russell's post We paid in Blood on the Legal Genealogist. Be sure to read the comments there's a great discussion happening.

Writing Family History - great advice or information on writing your family history.

This week’s mention:

This week you will not be disappointed if you listen in on this interview between two of my favourite writing motivators, Joanna Penn and Jeff Goins. Joanna interviews Jeff in this video post, You are a writer. Act Like One. With Jeff Goins. on the blog The Creative Penn. Take some time and listen.

This is a repost by Dan Curtis but I think it's a great tool to get you started writing. Check out How to Write Your Life Story in Twenty Statements

New Genealogy Blog – we will tip our hat to a newcomer who impresses us right out of the box

This week’s mention:

Yvette at Old Family Stories is off to a wonderful start. I was intriqued because of her French-Canadian heritage, after looking through her blog I love her organization and writing, nice family history blog. Yvette writes like she is detective off to find her next clue, very compelling to read. Pay her a visit maybe you can help her uncover her family history mysteries.

Social Media for the Genealogist - this will include social media advice and learning opportunities from experts both inside and outside of the genealogy industry.

This week's mentions:

Nicola at The Genealogy Workshop but together a 3-part series on creating a genealogy blog in Wordpress.com. I thought it was well done and for those of us who maybe intimidated by Wordpress, this series just might be the help you needed. You can started reading with Start a WordPress Blog: Day 1.

I agree with Jane Friedman on all counts in her recent post, 3 Horrible Mistruths About Social Media that Drive Me Insane by Jane Friedman at Electric Speed.

Books that Move and Matter - each week we will feature an ebook or print book with the family historian in mind. It may come as a great source of information, for research or writing or playing to our historical interests, or may just be a great read I think genealogists will love.

This week's book comes by recommendation of Caroline Pointer at For Your Family Story. Caroline offered us a book review this week on In the Territory of Lies  by Lois Stickell and Peg Robarchek. She convinced me to download it to my Kindle. You can read Caroline's review here. You may also want to consider joining her reader's group.
