Your article hits on some very excellent points about what and when family history should be revealed to others. Be kind.
If in their shoes you will want them to be understanding toward you when your story is told to future generations.

Thank you for this posting. We cannot be reminded often enough about this sort of thing - not just when we are sharing our family history stories, but in our daily lives. Too often we are only able to think and reason from our own personal point of view. We think our point of view is the only valid truth. This is a dangerously inaccurate premise.

Unfortunately, some genealogists get carried away with the excitement of knowing these extraordinary stories and secrets, and can't wait to tell others, forgetting that these are real people we are studying about, not just names with dates. If there is any doubt about whether or not a story should be told, it probably shouldn't.

Interesting, indeed.
I've been enjoying the series, and I wanted to see that show, but with the 3-week break, I got date-confused, and missed it. I do wish NBC would not do that!! It is very frustrating to lose the continuity in a series. It's not on Hulu.com yet, either, except as a trailer. Phooey!

Vis-a-vis the 'family secrets,' I'm researching a particular aunt with whom I've hit a brick wall. Whatever she did or did not do, I don't regard it as 'secret,' as she was often openly discussed at family gatherings, and not in a positive light. Something happened to turn the family against her, and I don't know what it was. Nor can I afford to hire a pro to help me untangle the story. I'm stuck with fragments.

In any case, I am free to fully publish whatever I find, as all those who knew her have now passed on, and she is 1 and 2 generations removed from those who remain.
