Monday Morning Mentions

Monday Morning Mentions is an opportunity to reflect on the events of the week at the Armchair Genealogist and in the blogging and  book community. Over my morning cappuccino, I will take the opportunity to share with you some of my favourite blogs posts this week and give a nod to my peers.Photoxpress_23848093

At the Armchair Genealogist this week, posts included the following:

Monday Morning Mentions
Family History Blog to Book - Defining the Scope of Your Project
Family Recipe Friday - French-Canadian Tourtiere

Each week I’m choosing blogs that deserve a shout out, they will be in the form of 4 categories, Internet Genealogy, Family History Writing, a New Genealogy Blog and Books that help all genealogists.  I will also highlight a book either print or ebook that I feel lends itself well to researching and writing family history. OK some weeks I choose more than 4 just because it to hard to pick just one, and it's my blog so I can change the rules.

Internet Genealogy – a great genealogy or internet tip that will benefit any armchair genealogist.
This week’s mention:

This week Marian Pierre-Louis at Roots and Rambles, asks You're Researching but are You Reading? Reading can single-handedly improve your genealogy research and Marian reminds us just how important reading is to our family history research.

The Genealogy Paradigm Shift: Are Bloggers the new "experts"?  by Michael Hait on his blog Planting the Seeds offers up some very thoughtful insights in respects to genealogy bloggers roles in the online and offline community.

Writing Family History - great advice or information on writing your family history.
This week’s mention:

Jeff Goins, once again brings us some great advice in his interview with Marion Roach Smith. Marion the author of the Memoir Project, shares some great tips on memoir writing in his post Memoir Writing Tips from Marion Roach Smith.

Check out Dan Curtis's post this week The Best Biography and Memoir Books of 2011. Looking to learn from some pros or looking for a good book to read over the holidays, Dan put together a great list.

New Genealogy Blog – we will tip our hat to a newcomer who impresses us right out of the box
This week’s mention:

First I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't mention Elizabeth Shown Mills new website, Historic Pathways. Please note, this is not a blog but a website, and it is not available via email or RSS feed. However, anyone serious about genealogy should have this website bookmarked in their favourites. There are plenty of articles that I am looking forward to working my way through over the next several weeks.

Growing Up in Unionville, Louisiana by James Jones, is a wonderful example of someone who is journaling and writing their family stories in a blog format. I love how this blog is laid out and is a great example of an option available to those looking to blog a book format. I look forward to following this blog and seeing how it develops over time.

Books that Move and Matter - each week we will feature an ebook or print book with the family historian in mind. It may come as a great source of information, for research or writing or playing to our historical interests, or may just be a great read I think genealogists will love.

As genealogists, family history writers, bloggers or perhaps just a human being with goals, we are always faced with an inner creative battle. If you want to push through your barriers and reach your potential then this book is for you. Steven Pressfield, best-selling author brings his knowledge to non-fiction and forces the reader to take a tough look at themselves in The War of Art. Perhaps just the read you need before making those New Year's resolutions.

You can find more new genealogy bloggers at Thomas' list of New Genealogy Blogs at Geneabloggers.

For other great reads, Randy at Genea-Musings offers the Best of the Genea-Blogs

Stop by the Week in Review by John at Transylvanian Dutch for another great round-up.

Dan Curtis, Professional Personal Historian always puts together some interesting selections in Monday's Link Round-Up.

Deb Ruth at Adventures in Genealogy offers Follow Friday Gems.

Have a great genealogy week, keep researching and writing!
