RESEARCH DIRECTOR - ProGenealogists
 
Ancestry.com is the world's largest online resource for family history. We have helped pioneer the market for online family history research, taking a pursuit that was expensive and time-consuming and making it easy, affordable and accessible to anyone with an interest in their family history. The foundation of our service is an extensive collection of billions of historical records that we have digitized, indexed and put online over the past 13 years. These digital records and documents, combined with our proprietary online search technologies, tools and collaboration features, have enabled our more than one million subscribers to create nearly 26 million family trees that contain nearly 2.6 billion profiles, and make meaningful discoveries about the lives of their ancestors.
 
ProGenealogists.com is a subsidiary of Ancestry.com consisting of professional genealogists who specialize in genealogy and family history research. With excellent researchers on staff, ProGenealogists has developed training, tools, and processes that aid in the delivery of high quality and cost effective research services to media groups, corporations, law firms, and the general public. ProGenealogists has researched histories for NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?, the PBS Ancestors SeriesAfrican American Lives, the BBC’s TimeWatch series, episode “The Iron Coffin,” and Showtime’s production The Tudors.
 
Job Description:
 
The Research Director will be responsible for all genealogical research at ProGenealogists, the official Ancestry.com research firm. The organization seeks an experienced and innovative individual who has a strong passion for genealogical research to communicate with the public while providing support to staff and clients in a corporate setting. The Research Director will design and refine training programs, evaluate research to insure quality, act as a consultant on difficult cases, and serve as lead research asset on the most challenging cases.
 
Only those candidates with strong problem solving and communication skills and at least 5 years professional genealogical research experience will be considered.
 
This position will be based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and will report to the General Manager.
 
Key Responsibilities / Performance Requirements:
  • Oversee all research activities
  • Lead large research initiatives as commissioned by Ancestry.com
  • Design training programs
  • Evaluate research produced by staff and third parties and insure quality product
  • Serve as “public face” by participating in conferences, associations, etc.
  • Act as the “voice” of research at ProGenealogists
  • Serve as consultant on certain cases
  • Carry a small case load
 
Required Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Graduate degree preferred, especially in fields such as History or Library Science
  • Exceptional fluency with relevant software and online resources such as Microsoft Office, Family Tree Maker, other GEDCOM software, and Ancestry.com
  • 5-8 years of genealogical research experience; at least 5 years as a professional genealogist
  • Leader in the field and well-published
  • Genealogical accreditations and certifications a plus
  • Language proficiencies preferred
