  1. Hi Lynn,

We have to be very careful when consulting pages like "Top Ten Reviews" and understand what we are seeing.

All programs are for pay - according to them, what is not true as Legacy basic is FREE -, but for sure they left out the real FREE ones like PAF and Family Tree Builder from MyHeritage.com

  2. Does anyone know of a genealogy program that allows notes to be entered in a "rich" format, in other word with embedded images and such? I've noticed that many software packages treat photos separately from the notes, which is not what I want. Instead I want the option of embedding images into the notes, possibly in html format. Any help is much appreciated.

Have you tried My Canvas with Ancestry?

  4. Hi Lynn,

I haven't. I assume this is an add-on? If so how would that address the issue of the notes format? I would think that the notes are integral to the software, not really an add-on sort of thing...

  5. Maybe I have misinterpreted your question. Are you looking for a genealogy book making program or strictly a program that organizes your genealogy. My Canvas is strictly a book making program.

  6. Hi Lynn,

    Since you ask...

I want a genealogy program that allows me to mix graphics in with the notes in the same way that I would design a webpage in html. Then....I should have the option of publishing my data and of course retaining all that formatting. So I guess I want it all.

I haven't worked on my genealogy in over ten years. At the time I used PAF and accumulated a great deal of data (including pictures). But without any way of elegantly publishing it, I felt I was at a dead end. Now, ten years later, I'm generally disappointed in how little the various genealogy software programs have progressed. Guess I'll give it another ten years...

You should check out My Canvas with ancestry. You do not need to have an ancestry subscription however, if you do it will pull all your info into the book for you. It offers thousands of graphic options, adds your pictures that you can manipulative in many ways. You can write your stories and add them to the same pages, layering all this on the page. Then of course there are many options for colour and printing. You can email me directly at lynnpalermo@sympatico.ca if you would like more info. We are currently creating a 200 page family history book with My Canvas and honestly I have yet to see another program that offers the graphics and options this program offers. PS I don't get a referral fee this is just a recommendation from my own personal experience.
